It is bounded byNagalandto the north,Mizoramto the south, andAssamto the west;Burmalies to its east. The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres (8,621 sq mi). Its people include the Meetei, Kuki, Naga, Pangal, Gorkhali and Bishnupriya Manipuri, who speak different types ofTibeto-Burman languages.. The recorded history of the state dates back to 33 AD, when Pakhangba, and Indian adventurer, founded a dynasty which ruled uninterrupted till 1891. It came under the reign of the British after the defeat of the princely state in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. It was later merged with the Indian Union on 15th October 1949. Manipur attained statehood on 21st January 1972.
