Aizawl

Aizawl is the largest city as well as the capital of Mizoram. The Tropic of Cancer runs almost through the middle of Mizoram. The state is situated on a ridge 1132 metres (3715 ft) above sea level, with the Tlawng river valley to its west and the Tuirial river valley to its east.

Mizoram State Museum : Located in the heart of the town, Mizoram State Museum showcases several items that unravel the cultural heritage of the state. The items stored in the museum comprise of photographs, musical instruments and archaeological objects. It also has an eclectic collection of wildlife specimens and tribal weapons. Though small, this museum spells out a record number of 2500 items, each of which confirm the multifarious past and traditional background of Mizoram. There is also an ethnological section which is dedicated to tribes of Mizoram.

Luangmual Handicarfts Centre : Located at about 7 kms from the main town of Aizawl, Luangmual Handicrafts Centre specializes in the handicrafts of the region. It is here that the traditional bamboo hat ‘Khumbeu’- is made using waterproof 'hnahthial' leaves. These leaves are exclusive to the hilly terrain. Also available here are an array of artefacts such as jewellery baskets made of bamboo, wicker baskets, wooden articles and hand woven purses all priced very competitively.

Durtlang Hills : Situated to the north of Aizwal high above the city, these hills provide a majestic view of the entire Aizwal city. The way to Durtlang itself is enjoyable as one climbs to the top amidst a scenic rural setting. One never gets a complete picture of Aizwal unless one visits the Durtlang Hills.

Bara Bazar : Bara Bazar is a very colourful shopping centre for both traditional and trendy products. A huge variety of colourful garments, handicrafts and the like are available here. Bara Bazar is a popular flea market in Aizawl where the people, particularly local folk from nearby villages are best seen in their traditional costumes selling produce from farms and homesteads. These include river crabs in little wicker baskets.
